Our Theme

In the spirit of The Decameron, we curate bi-weekly themes to lend structure to the broad realm of fiction. Participants may choose to follow that theme, or to write untamed by our recommendation, confident in the knowledge that, not only will all stories appear in our catalog, but that the very best in any category will win acknowledgement, praise, or prize.

Our first theme is Courage. Courage has dominated storytelling since Homer’s Odyssey –– and we need courage now more than ever. In this uncertainty, into which The Decameron Project was born, courage should be our North Star. It is courage, the courage of our healthcare workers, the courage of our leaders, and the courage of every person that stays home that will help us through this time of crisis. We ask our participants to write on this broad theme, to direct it any way they please, and to continue thinking about courage as it relates to the present.
