Twenty Seconds

For just twenty seconds when I first open my eyes.
When I am getting out of bed.
Wondering why I am up at nine a.m.
Adrenaline rushes through me.
Because I am once again this month, late for school.
Those first twenty seconds when I wake up, I am oblivious to reality
Because in those first twenty seconds
244,778 people aren’t dead
And 3.42 million aren’t wondering if they’re going to live
While 300 million students are still attending classes
And 26 million Americans aren’t out of a job
In those first twenty seconds, nothing is wrong
It’s just another Tuesday
And I am just late for class
