In the spirit of The Decameron, we curate monthly themes to lend structure to the broad realm of fiction. Participants may choose to follow that theme, or to write untamed by our recommendation, confident in the knowledge that, not only will all stories appear in our catalog, but that the very best in any category will win acknowledgement, praise, or prize.
Our current theme is struggle. In the arc of any story, struggle abounds –– and it’s a word that is sure to pervade the stories of the unique, generational moment we find ourselves in. At home and abroad we see near universal struggling –– for justice, for freedom, and for safety and well-being during a pandemic. But we struggle with hope, because we know that out of struggle comes progress. We ask our participants to write on this broad theme, to direct it any way they please, and to continue thinking about how we’re all struggling, and what we’re struggling for, in the present moment.
Winners for the theme of struggle will be announced in the final week of December.
