When you’re joined by someone like Elizabeth Acevedo, you don’t want to be artificial. We won’t be. Our conversation won’t be constrained, but we will focus on a few key themes: how to be creative when the world is stifling, how to make change with writing, and, for all our devoted students, how to weave it all together. Poet, novelist, and National Poetry Slam Champion, Elizabeth Acevedo was born and raised in New York City, the only daughter of Dominican immigrants. Her poetry is infused with Dominican bolero and her beloved city’s tough grit. From the border in the Dominican Republic to the bustling streets of New York City, Acevedo considers how some bodies must walk through the world as beastly beings. She’s also given TedTalks and has been a featured reader nationally and internationally, including appearance at renowned venues such as The Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, the Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, South Africa’s State Theatre, The Bozar in Brussels, the National Library of Kosovo and many others.

To center youth voice in the event, we invite all students & NYC Youth Leadership Councils members to submit short reflections –– around 100 to 200 words –– for publication in a special section of our site and Documentar social media platforms. Your reflections can be wide ranging: ways you’ve been involved with leadership and service, what activism means to you, a personal anecdote about the power of writing, or anything else you think connects to the themes of our conversation.
