Our second theme is Sacrifice. Sacrifice has pulsed through the veins of storytelling for over two millennia –– from Sophocles’ Oedipus the King to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Sacrifice is history’s agent of change: in India, they went without food; in Montgomery, without busses; and their sacrifices, and those of other heroes throughout history, have shaped the modern world. Often, sacrifice means survival. Now more so than ever. We all make small, but heroic, sacrifices when we stay at home –– and the bravest of us risk their lives to work, to help, in the thick of this unprecedented pandemic. In that spirit, we’re asking students to write stories under this broad theme: we want to hear them weigh in.
